Cuba is the largest island and one of the most populous islands of the Caribbean. At 766 miles, it is the world’s 17th largest island. It is a beautiful country with its people and culture representing a mixture of aboriginal Taino and Ciboney people, Spanish from colonial times and African slaves during there introduction to the Americas. Moreover, numerous Americans and others from islands and regions in proximity have come to inhabit Cuba. There are also minor populations of Chinese as well as Muslims on the island.
Cuba has a tropical climate, with warm weather throughout the year, ranging from 20-40 Celsius.
Cuba was discovered by Christopher Columbus during his first voyage. He subsequently claimed it for Spain. The island was initially named for Prince Juan, Isla Juana. The island at the time was found to be inhabited by the Taino and Ciboney. These individuals had inhabited the islands for centuries prior to Columbus’ appearance. They are believed to have migrated there from South America.
The first settlement on the island was by Diego Velazquez de Cuellar at Baracoa. It was founded in 1511. The first capital of Cuba was San Cristobel de la Habana.
Due to oppression and slavery, as was the usually case in Colonial Spain, and the introduction of diseases from Europe, the indigenous people suffering and slowly disappeared as a nation.
Now, Cuba is a multicultural island, with people from all over the world and represents a country of cultural and national beauty, in addition to offering beautiful beaches, a tropical climate and great hospitality.
